Begin with the action
Before enabling a new alert, decide what evidence would make it credible and what action should follow. If the team cannot describe either, the signal is not ready for production.
This discipline shifts detection from collecting events to protecting business outcomes.
Measure usefulness
Counting closed alerts rewards speed, not security. Review which detections led to meaningful investigation, which arrived with the context analysts needed, and which repeatedly consumed time without changing a decision.
- Track time to confident triage, not just time to close.
- Retire or redesign detections that never change an action.
- Tune with identity, endpoint, and cloud context together.
- Rehearse the response attached to every high-severity signal.
Make ownership visible
Every production detection needs a named owner, a review date, and a documented response. When the environment changes, that owner decides whether the signal changes with it.
A calm queue is not the objective. A queue the team understands and trusts is.
Useful security starts with a clear next move.
